This is my first pentaptych, I created this in response to events at the start of the year which I blogged about here .
The piece came about in direct response to creative block. I was thinking about a lot of things reflectively in my practice, the sciences of complexity in both the natural and digital worlds and equating them to one another. I wasn’t drawing anything new and I was stuck in the quagmire of business, promotion and general life requirements that seemed to be taking up most of my time. I wasn’t making anything of note or even having the time to do so.
To break through block the advice is to work through it. So I broke down what I was thinking into its constituent parts. The two outside panels are textbook examples of the digital aspects of what I refer to in my painting and the two inside panels are the natural side i.e. the landscape aspects of what I do. The middle panel is my personal bold mark-making that becomes actual complexity during the making of the piece. It surrounds itself with the reality of complexity seeping through the mark -making as its nature imposes itself over and in the marks itself.
In this way, I was able to break it down and create something that broke through in itself and with me. I have worked my way through the block and it has worked its way through the piece.
